Between 3000 and 4000 drivers were expected to receive fines
Almost four months after the Sofia municipal inspectorate started its action to check and fine cars that are parked on the sidewalk, the head of the inspectorate Veska Georgieva said that the first fines would be send out over the next two weeks.
Between 3000 and 4000 drivers were expected to receive fines, Bulgarian-language broadcaster zagrada.bg reported on June 26.
Fines would be given for cars parked at less than two meters from buildings. Since the middle of March 2008, inspectorate employees have patrolled the streets, armed with digital cameras. The inspectors took pictures of each wrongly-parked car from three angles, together with the car’s registration and the date and time violation was registered, zagrada.bg said.
Following this, the municipality will send letters to the owners of the cars, in which the owners are given a seven-day grace period in which to pay the fine from the traffic police, or to file an appeal. After this period, and if the owner has not collected the parking ticket, it would be send to the owner’s registration address, zagrada.bg said.
The Sofia city council decided on June 26 to expand the project and to have inspectors cover the entire city. The municipality announced a public procurement for the acquisition of cars for the teams. Inspectors would be working round-the-clock, zagrada.bg said.
Fines for incorrectly parking on pavement were 30 leva, throwing cigarette-ends on the street would be fined with 10 leva.
